2025 Official Buriram MotoGP Test - Day 1 as it happened

Live updates from Wednesday’s opening day of the 2025 Official Buriram MotoGP test.

The final 2025 MotoGP pre-season test began on Wednesday morning at Buriram in Thailand.

Gresini’s Alex Marquez put the Ducati GP24 on top last week at Sepang and, having also been fastest at November’s Barcelona test, has the chance to complete a winter clean sweep.

Meanwhile, the factory Ducati team of brother Marc Marquez and Francesco Bagnaia have some big decisions to make over engine choice for the new GP25, with the engines of all European bikes frozen from round one until the end of 2026.

Fabio Quartararo and Yamaha stepped up to occupy best of the rest behind Ducati at Sepang but, having benefitted from extra track time at the Shakedown, can they keep pace on an equal playing field at Buriram?

Honda is the only manufacturer with prior 2025 MotoGP laps of the Chang International Circuit, courtesy of a private test in January with Aleix Espargaro and Takaaki Nakagami.

Absent this week will be Aprilia’s new signing and reigning MotoGP champion Jorge Martin and VR46’s Fabio di Giannantonio who were both injured at Sepang. Raul Fernandez, also injured on the first day in Malaysia, will try to ride in Buriram.

Testing at Buriram takes place from 10am to 6pm, followed by practice starts, on Wednesday and Thursday.

Joan Mir, 13th on the combined timesheets, has fallen from his Honda. 'Rider okay'.

Team-mate Luca Marini is still holding an impressive 5th place after his earlier lap time.

08:53

Meanwhile, some interesting info from Dorna's Jack Appleyard, who reports:

"Both Bagnaia and Marquez are only working with the GP24!

"New engine, new chassis, new aero have disappeared from Sepang"

08:52

Aprilia's Marco Bezzecchi now leads the afternoon session and is second overall, 0.145s behind Alex Marquez, on combined times for the day.

No change to the best lap times as riders continue to work on race pace in the mid-afternoon heat...

Just over 3 hours of Wednesday testing to go, the extreme heat means there have been no recent lap time improvements but it's still vital prep for the race weekend.

The top 6: Alex Marquez, Pedro Acosta, Marc Marquez, Luca Marini, Marco Bezzecchi, Franco Morbidelli.

Here's a picture, from our photographers Gold & Goose, of Aldeguer's earlier practice start swerve. He fortunately missed team-mate Alex Marquez...

2:45pm and the hottest conditions of the day, but also when the Sprint/Grand Prix will be held at the season-opening race weekend.

Test leader Alex Marquez, second fastest Pedro Acosta plus Francesco Bagnaia and Jack Miller are currently out on track in the scorching 35-degree heat.

07:28

Marco Bezzecchi has spoken to the Buriram media.

Bez explained that he's still testing (unspecified) new parts for the RS-GP25, which he hopes to finish today so he can concentrate fully on set-up for the race weekend tomorrow.

The Italian, who has only ever raced a Ducati in the premier-class, added that he's happy with his practice starts on the Aprilia.

07:22

It looks like Marc Marquez had a technical issue earlier in the day. Fastest in the opening hour, he's currently in 3rd behind Alex Marquez and Pedro Acosta.

2pm Results - 2025 Buriram MotoGP Test (Day 1)

06:41

It looks like rookie Fermin Aldeguer got his Gresini completely sideways during the earlier practice start period but fortunately kept control. He also had a few wild practice starts at Sepang. All part of the learning curve.

06:38

Aprilia test rider Lorenzo Savadori, on track in place of the injured Jorge Martin, has just spoken to the Buriram media. He's been working on the electronics of the RS-GP this morning. "We tried to find a different road compared to our normal [electronic] set-up".

06:30

LCR Honda team-mates Johann Zarco and Somkiat Chantra have been back on track.

06:11

Unlike the Sepang test, where the track was open all the way from 10am to 6pm, there will be a break at Buriram to allow for an extra practice start period (as well as the usual practice start session at the end of each day).

06:06

1pm and it's still Alex Marquez ruling the Buriram timesheets from Pedro Acosta, with Marc Marquez in third and Luca Marini the lead Honda in 4th.

The top 10 contains: 4 Ducatis, 2 KTMs, 2 Aprilias, 1 Honda and 1 Yamaha.

05:43

Early leader Marc Marquez sets his best time of the day so far to climb back to third, behind brother Alex and Acosta.

05:41

So it's currently a Ducati (Alex Marquez), from a KTM (Acosta), Honda (Marini) and Aprilia (Bezzechhi).

Jack Miller is now ahead of Quartararo to be the top Yamaha, in 9th, just behind Marc Marquez.

05:12

12:10pm and there's a change at the top, Sepang leader Alex Marquez puts his Gresini machine 0.255s clear of Acosta.

05:10

Luca Marini leapfrogs back into 3rd for Honda, with fellow VR46 Academy rider Francesco Bagnaia now the top factory Ducati team rider in 4th.

04:58

Franco Morbidelli puts the GP24 as the top Ducati again by taking over third behind Acosta and Bezzecchi. Brad Binder fourth and Marc Marquez now fifth.

04:54

Temperatures are now in the low 30s, which is still reasonable for Buriram. Temps should peak at 34 degrees in the early afternoon.

The same temperature range (low of 18 degrees at night, 34 degrees max in the day) is also expected tomorrow.
